Introducing Real Riders, Real Routes

Watercolour cartoon of Cannonball legend Jim Horne lost under a signpost in the Scottish Highlands

The best roads aren't found in guidebooks. They're the ones riders come back to again and again — the Sunday loop from home, the pass you always detour for, the café stop everyone in the area knows about. So I've started a new series to share them.

What it's about

In Real Riders, Real Routes, riders I've met on the road tell their story and share their favourite route, with a free GPX file so you can ride it yourself. Some will be Cannonball legends I've ridden with across Europe and beyond, flagged as Cannonball Legends. Others will be Motorcycles & Legends readers with a road they love.

Every feature has two parts:

  • The rider: a Q&A about how they started, the bikes they've owned, the best and worst moments and the advice they'd give.
  • The route: their favourite ride, mapped and checked, with the coffee stops, lunch stops and must-see places, plus a free GPX download.

First up: Jim Horne

The first rider is my friend and Cannonball legend Jim Horne from Peterhead. Fifty years of riding, from a Kawasaki Z1300 to his Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, and some cracking stories along the way. He's also shared one of the routes he rides quite often from home: the Peterhead Whisky Loop through Speyside, over the Lecht and Glenshee and back to the coast.

Every rider has a story and a favourite road. If you'd like to be in the series, get in touch. We'll have a chat, I'll send you a few questions, and together we'll share your route with other riders.
